Making my first batch of soap felt a little mysterious because I had never actually witnessed the saponification process — watching oils and lye transform into soap. It took me right back to chemistry lab, wearing a mask and goggles while carefully handling lye. The amazing part is that after six weeks of curing, you no longer have fats and lye at all — it has completely transformed into soap.
